Jerry Weems has been
an artist all his life. From the time he was a child he has always gravitated
toward classical painting. While growing up in rural Mississippi with modest
means, visiting art galleries and museums was not possible. However, his
grandmother had an old Bible that was tattered and worn, but containted
a plethora of religious paintings such as masters as Caravaggio, Michelangleo,
and Leonardo da Vinci. He would sit for hours flipping through the torn
pages with pencil and paper in hand, trying to capture the likeness of
the paintings. As a result he became even more fascinated with classical
paintings. Although his art is based on this style- he also paints in a
self described childlike style that allows him greater freedom of expression.
His art is a reflection of past experiences and everyday life.
